Scrap Loom
Many people express themselves through collecting small meaningful items, sticking them to fridges or in scrapbooks, but such canvases are limited when it comes to capacity and accessibility.
Scrap Loom is a dynamic, wall-mounted scrapbook that allows your collections to evolve and be seen.

Project Goals and Inspiration
Many people hold onto small paper items, sticking them to fridges and in scrapbooks, as well as pilled on mantels, in shoe boxes and junk drawers.

These items include anything from stray family photos, wedding invitations and post cards
to ticket stubs, little doodles, and candy wrappers.

My project focuses on designing a place for these collections to grow, be collaborated on, and seen.
Development and Prototyping
I was initially inspired by rolodexes, and how they held many pages, but were made to be easily accessed and displayed.
I found inspiration with string, using it as an alternative to fasteners
My first prototype, created by drilling holes
Material sketch models, helping me decide on cotton yarn.
I worked mainly with the CNC for prototyping, increasing efficiency, stability and aesthetics each time.
From left to right, my development up to the final frame design.
Final Fabrication
Process time-lapse of the fabrication of one frame.
The wall mounted base was designed to allow for interchangeability, and easy removal in insertion of frames.
The Scrap Loom
People build a relationship with the
Scrap Loom by threading it themselves.

First, they wind yarn of their choice around the frames on either side,

Second, they sew the layers together.

People can choose colored frames or wood frames, thread them one at a time, or many.
The Scrap Loom is meant to be a slow object, evolving through the years,
with the beauty of the collection exceeding each's items initial potential.
